Maths is meant to be the easy one to spot. Unlike English, where a weakness can hide behind fluent reading, maths gives you numbers. Right answers and wrong ones. Marks on a page. Surely if your child were behind in maths, you’d know?
Not necessarily. Maths gaps are better at hiding than almost anything else in school, and by the time they announce themselves properly, they’ve often been quietly growing for a year or two. Here’s how to tell whether your child is actually behind in maths, and what to do if they are.
Why Maths Gaps Hide So Well
The reason is that maths is cumulative, and children are resourceful.
A child who doesn’t really understand fractions can still get fraction questions right by memorising a procedure. Flip the second one and multiply. They don’t know why, but it works, and it produces correct answers, and correct answers look like understanding from the outside. That child is not behind on their marks. They’re behind on their understanding, and the two come apart later, when a question arrives that the memorised procedure doesn’t fit.
Schools can’t always catch this either. In a class of thirty, a child producing correct answers is a child who’s fine. Nobody has time to ask whether they actually understand what they’re doing.
So the gap sits there, hidden inside correct answers, until a harder topic arrives that requires real understanding rather than a remembered rule. Then it surfaces all at once, and it looks like a sudden collapse. It isn’t. It’s an old gap finally bearing weight it can’t hold.
The Signs That Actually Tell You
Marks are the last signal, not the first. Look for these instead.
Slowness is the big one. A child who gets the right answer but takes a long time to get there is often reconstructing something that should be automatic. Watch how they handle times tables. If seven eights requires visible thought, that’s a fluency gap, and fluency gaps eat into everything else, because a child spending mental energy on the basics has less left for the actual problem.
Finger counting past the early years is a related tell. Perfectly normal in Year 1 and 2. A signal worth noticing in Year 5.
Watch what happens with unfamiliar questions. A child who understands can adapt when a question is worded differently or approached from a new angle. A child who has memorised procedures comes unstuck the moment the question doesn’t look like the ones they practised. If your child can do the practice questions but falls apart on the test, that’s usually what’s going on.
Watch their explanations. Ask them to tell you how they got the answer. A child who understands can walk you through it, however clumsily. A child who says “I just did what the teacher showed us” and can’t say why may be standing on ground they don’t actually own.
And watch the language, because it’s often the earliest sign of all. “I hate maths.” “I’m just not a maths person.” Children rarely decide this out of nowhere. They usually decide it because maths has stopped making sense, and no one has noticed yet.
Where the Gap Usually Started
Here’s the thing that surprises most parents. The place your child is coming unstuck is almost never where the problem began.
A Year 6 student stuck on fractions is often really stuck on multiplication and division from Year 4. A Year 8 student lost in algebra is often really lost in fractions from Year 5. The current topic is where the gap shows, not where it lives.
This matters enormously, because it changes what you do about it. Drilling this week’s homework harder doesn’t work, because the difficulty isn’t in this week’s content. It’s underneath it. You have to go back, find the soft spot, firm it up, and then move forward. It feels slower. It’s dramatically faster in the end, because you only have to do it once.
What to Do
Don’t panic, and don’t let your child feel your worry as pressure. A child who senses anxiety about their maths tends to become more anxious themselves, and anxiety makes maths harder, not easier.
Get specific information. Vague worry can’t be acted on. What you want to know is which topics are actually secure, which aren’t, and how far back the soft spot really goes. That turns a formless concern into a plan.
And act sooner rather than later, because maths gaps genuinely do compound. A gap that takes a term to close in Year 4 takes considerably longer in Year 8, and by then the child has usually acquired a belief about themselves that also needs undoing.

When a child comes to us behind in maths, we don’t start with this week’s homework. We start by finding where the ground actually gets soft, which is very often further back than anyone expected. Naming that is usually a relief for the child, too. It’s not that they’re bad at maths. It’s that they’ve been building on something that was never quite finished.

Each hour opens with a few minutes of skills work, the times tables and mental maths that need to become automatic, then real teaching, then the student working through it themselves until it holds.
